The Cost Of Discipleship

I. Training Objective: List from memory five costs of discipleship listed below

II. What is a disciple? (Follower, learner)

"Follow me" were the first and last words Jesus spoke to His disciples (Mark 1:17; Jn 21:22).

Jesus' standards:

1. John 15:7-8 "abide in me". (continue)
2. John 8:31-32 "abide in My Word". (obedience)
3. John 13:34-35 Love for one another. (love)
4. Luke 14:25-27 Carry cross. (rejection and suffering)
5. Luke 14:33 Give up everything. (giver)

III. Why must we be disciples?

A. It's commanded (Matthew 28:18-20)
B. To feed and be fed (Jeremiah 3:15)
C. To multiply (II Timothy 2:2)
D. Few workers, harvest is plentiful
    (Matthew 9:37-38)

IV. Count the cost (Luke 6:46)

A. Luke 9:23-27 Daily self denial; rejection.
B. Luke 14:26 Puts Christ before family.
C. Luke 14:33 Puts Christ before possessions, status.
D. Matthew 10:32 Openly identified with Christ
E. Colossians 1:28-29 Willingness to invest in others

V. Rewards for a disciplemaker

A. I Thessalonians 3:9 Great Joy
B. I Peter 5:4 Receive a crown of glory
C. I Thessalonians 2:19,20 Glory in the Lord's presence.

VI. Conclusion: If your not willing to pay the price, then put it down.
